Commercial Switchboards

Upgrades, repairs and testing for shops, offices and small industrial premises

A commercial switchboard is a different animal to a domestic one. Higher loads, three phase supply, more circuits, and a much bigger problem if it fails during trading hours.

Most of the commercial boards we see around Mandurah and Rockingham fall into two camps. Older premises where the board has been added to piecemeal over the years until nobody knows what feeds what, and newer fit-outs where the board was sized for the previous tenant rather than the current one.

We work on boards for shops, offices, salons, cafes and small industrial units.

What we do

Board upgrades

Replacing boards that are full, outdated or no longer match the load the premises actually draws.

RCD protection

Bringing commercial boards up to current standard with correct residual current protection.

Circuit identification

Tracing and labelling every circuit, so faults can be isolated quickly instead of guessed at.

Adding capacity

New ways and sub-circuits for extra equipment, without overloading what is already there.

Thermal and fault checks

Finding loose terminations and overheating before they take a circuit out mid-trade.

Common questions

My board trips when we turn everything on in the morning.

That is usually a capacity problem rather than a fault. The board and supply were sized for a lighter load than you are now running. We check what is actually being drawn before recommending anything.

Do commercial boards need RCDs?

Requirements depend on the installation and its age, but current standards expect residual current protection on most circuits. It is worth knowing where you stand, particularly if the premises has been altered over the years.

Do you handle three phase?

Yes. Most commercial premises around here are three phase and that is normal work.
