7 Signs Your Switchboard Needs an Upgrade

The switchboard is the heart of any home or commercial property’s electrical system. Every circuit runs through it, and when it ages or becomes overloaded, the consequences can be serious. Many switchboards in Mandurah and the Peel region are decades old and still in service, often without the owner realising there is a problem.

Here are seven warning signs that a switchboard may need upgrading.

1. Ceramic Fuses Instead of Circuit Breakers

Older switchboards often feature ceramic fuse holders with thin replaceable wire inside. These were standard before circuit breakers became common. They work, but they offer no RCD protection, they trip slowly compared to modern breakers, and replacement fuse wire needs to be the correct rating to work safely.

If a switchboard still uses ceramic fuses, it is generally well past the point of needing replacement.

2. No Safety Switches (RCDs)

In Western Australia, every residential property must have working RCDs covering all power and lighting circuits. A safety switch can be identified by a small “TEST” button on the switch itself. If a board has no switches with this button, it does not have RCD protection.

This is a legal compliance issue as well as a safety one.

3. Visible Burn Marks or Scorching

Any discolouration on the front of a switchboard, around the breakers, or inside the cabinet is a serious warning sign. It usually means a connection has been arcing and generating heat, which is one of the leading causes of switchboard fires.

Burn marks should be treated as urgent and inspected without delay.

4. A Hot or Plasticky Smell

A switchboard in good condition should have no noticeable smell. A warm, plastic-like odour can indicate a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or a failing breaker. These issues are usually fixable, but they should be addressed quickly to prevent further damage.

5. Breakers That Trip Often

Circuit breakers trip for a reason. If they trip regularly, particularly when certain appliances are switched on, the circuit may be overloaded for the wiring it is protecting. This is common in older homes where kitchens have been renovated but the underlying wiring has not been updated to suit modern appliances.

The fix is often a new dedicated circuit, which requires switchboard space and capacity to accommodate it.

6. The Switchboard Is Full

Every switchboard has a finite number of slots for breakers. When the board is full, adding any new circuit becomes difficult. This can be a problem for properties that want to add an EV charger, a pool pump, solar, or ducted air conditioning.

A larger or modern board is usually the proper answer rather than working around the limitation.

7. Planning to Add Solar, an EV Charger or a Heat Pump

Modern electrical loads are increasing. A high-output EV charger, a solar system with battery storage, or an electric hot water heat pump all place demands on a switchboard. Boards installed before 2010 were often not designed for this level of capacity, and may need bonding upgrades or full replacement before new equipment can be connected.

Having the switchboard assessed early in the planning stage avoids surprises later.

What a Switchboard Upgrade Involves

A switchboard upgrade is typically a half-day to full-day job, depending on the size of the property and complexity of the existing wiring. The process usually involves isolating the main supply, removing the old board, mounting the new enclosure, wiring in RCDs, breakers and surge protection, and testing each circuit individually. A compliance certificate is issued once the work is complete.

The benefit is a properly protected electrical system with full RCD coverage, surge protection for sensitive electronics, room to expand in the future, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing the heart of the system is safe.

Don’t Wait Until Something Goes Wrong

The expensive version of this story is finding out a switchboard has failed because of a fire, or because an insurance assessor flagged it after a claim. The far cheaper version is having it assessed while everything still appears to be working.
